Thomas D. Bridgers, Sr., 83, of Richmond, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 13 after an extended illness. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Dorothy Gray Bridgers and a much loved son, Thomas D. Bridgers, Jr. and his wife Teresa, all of Richmond. In addition to a brother-in-law, Josh Tomlinson of Raleigh NC and a sister-in-law, Lynette Gray of Norfolk, he is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Tom was born on October 31, 1927 in Elm City, NC He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1946, after a failed attempt to enlist several years earlier at age 16 by exaggerating his age to the recruiter. He served on the USS Paracutin AE18 in the South Pacific. After his military service, he worked for the U. S. VA Naval Shipyard, traveling to ships to audit military pay records.

Tom started his insurance career in Norfolk in 1957 and moved to Richmond in 1962 as Manager of the Brokerage Office of Occidental Life of California. He later served as a Vice President of Life of Virginia, working to develop its Brokerage Division. In 1977, he established the Tom Bridgers Agency. During his career, he won various marketing awards and distinctions, also serving as past president of the Richmond Association of Life Underwriters, the Richmond Association of Health Underwriters, and the Virginia State Association of Health Underwriter, and teaching life underwriter training courses at T.C. Williams Law School at the University of Richmond.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and served as Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Acca Temple Shrine, participating in many benefits for the Crippled Children's Hospital. He was a member of Buford Road Baptist Church and enjoyed serving as a volunteer at Chippenham Hospital after his retirement.

Tom's friends and family will greatly miss his quick wit and winning smile. He was small of stature but big of heart. He truly never met a stranger - only made a new friend.
The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, on Sunday, April 17 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. He will be remembered at a Celebration of Life service to be held at the funeral home on Monday, April 18 at 11:00 am, with burial following at Westhampton Memorial Park. Memorial donations can be made to the Buford Road Baptist Church Building Fund, 819 Buford Road, Richmond, VA 23235.
